In cash-strapped state, how will we pay for public higher education?

By Steve Wiegand swiegand@sacbee.com

Published Sunday, Feb. 07, 2010 Sacramento Bee

On a mild, overcast day in October 2007, a University of California graduate
lobbed a rhetorical bomb at his alma mater: What if the public
university went private?

"Suppose," mused state Treasurer Bill Lockyer in a widely distribute

Restructuring Committee announced by EVC Waugh

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Vice Chancellors, UCLA Faculty

Dear Colleagues:

Governor Schwarzenegger’s 2010-11 budget, released on January 8, acknowledges the importance of higher education to California and proposes to reinstate some of the UC funding that had been cut. The likelihood that this proposal will survive the legislative budgeting process, however, is uncertain. Even under the best-case scena… Continue

Waiting List for New Applicants to be Created at UC

The University of California to Play the Waiting-List Game
By RACHEL GROSS

For the first time in its history, the University of California is expected to institute waiting lists for incoming applicants, possibly starting this spring. More than 1,000 applicants may be affected.

It’s a turning point for the university, with real symbolic heft. The practice is more often associated with private universities and tightly limited space.

The decision to adopt wait… Continue

NewCLA [nü⋅c⋅l⋅a] is hope for the UCLA community.
It is a multi-perspective group started by students to provide a free space to re-imagine the University. It spans from art activism to alternate models of peacefully demonstrating that we want change. The budget crisis affects everyone at UCLA and instead of holding us down, it will bring us together, in the… Continue

Denham bill would cap college fee hikes

(Note: Denham was viewed as a Republican from swing district who might have cast a needed vote to pass a stalled state budget in 2007. But he didn't - he was considering a run for Lt. Governor and would have needed to win a Republican primary - and was for a time the target of a recall spearheaded by then-Senate president Perata. So it is unlikely that Denham's bill will go anywhere now since the Democrats don't like him.)

New LAO report on master plan released

I have not had a chance to look at the new report in detail but the full report is at:

http://www.lao.ca.gov/reports/2010/edu/ed_coordination/ed_coordination_012810.pdf

Executive Summary

Coordination Mechanisms Inadequate. Coordination is necessary to guide public higher educational institutions toward collectively meeting state needs. Coordination does not always require active direction by a stat… Continue

UC protests LAO critique of governor's higher ed/prison proposed constitutional amendment

UC response to LAO report on Governor's higher education proposal

Date: 2010-01-26
Contact: University of California Office of the President
Phone: (510) 987-9200

The following is a statement from Patrick Lenz, UC vice president for budget, in response to the state Legislative Analyst's opinion on the Governor's higher education proposal:

We disagree with the Legislative Analyst on this one. The report accurately diagnoses the problem - the long-term shift in priorities away from higher educa… Continue

LAO Criticizes Gov's Higher Ed/Prison Proposal and Points to Tuition as Revenue Source

Legislative Analyst Criticizes Governor's Higher Ed/Prisons Proposal as Restrictive on Budget Allocation. Points to tuition as source of revenue. (See the material marked *** below for LAO's revenue/tuition comment. As an earlier post noted, the LAO's position that the state has no liability for the UC pension is a de facto endorsement of privatization.)

Note: The text of the LAO report is reprinted below. A chart that goes with the report can be seen at:… Continue

SavingUCLA Community Guidelines

Saving UCLA is an online space for people in the UCLA community concerned about preserving excellent and accessible public higher education in California. Just as we do in our classrooms and professional meetings, here at Saving UCLA we expect dialogue that is open, civil, and respectful of different opinions. Therefore we ask members to observe the "Three R's": Real names, Relevant content, Respectful dialogue.

* Real people, real names. If you believe you have a reason to use an alias, contact the site administrators to explain your case. Otherwise register with your real name. And remember, everyone else is a real person, too, not an avatar.

* Relevance. Keep the discussion focused on UCLA, the UC, public education in California and the nation, and closely related issues. There are better venues for other topics. Same goes for photos and videos, which should always have some basic description to help members understand why they are relevant to the discussion.

* Respect for those who agree with you, and those who do not. Before you press "send," ask yourself "do I really want to be associated with these comments...forever."

We put these guidelines in place not to stifle discussion, but because we have seen how easily tempers and emotions can rise in online forums. Anyone who persistently violates these simple guidelines will be asked to leave the conversation.
